Phil Jackson Profile

Phil Jackson is among one of the best NBA coaches in league history. As coach of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls he led them to six NBA Championships. He later went on to coach the LA Lakers and seize five more NBA Championships between 2000 and 2010.

In 20 seasons, Phil has compiled the best winning percentage among NBA coaches. Known as “the Zen Master” his holistic style of mentoring and motivating his players has made him a sought-out speaker and consultant by companies wishing to craft their own championship work force. During his career Phil had the challenge of getting big personalities and talent such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant to work collectively with their respected teams. His book Sacred Hoops describes the Native American spiritual beliefs that played such an important role in coaching what became some of the best-performing teams in the country. His latest book Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success further delves into the fascinating insider details of his coaching career and how eastern philosophy influenced his leadership techniques.

Prior to becoming a coach, he was drafted as a player for the New York Knicks where he became a fan favorite due to his intelligence and hard work as a defense player. He won two NBA titles, making him one of only nine people who have won NBA championships as both a player and coach.

Currently, Jackson serves as President of the Knicks.

    Eight-time NBA Championship Coach

The NBA record books are replete with accomplishments of the Bulls during Phil Jackson′s tenure, including the 1995-96 championship season in which the Bulls established a new NBA record for regular season wins, finishing 72-10. By the close of the 1997-98 season, Phil Jackson had amassed 560 career victories as a coach in the NBA. He reached his 200th and 300th career victories faster than any other coach in NBA history. But as NBA fans know, it is the playoffs that count and Phil owns the highest playoff winning percentage of all NBA coaches.

Phil Jackson is constantly asked to share his motivational techniques — not just with other coaches, but with people in all walks of life. As a response to this demand, he wrote Sacred Hoops. Sacred Hoops presents Phil′s philosophy of mindful basketball–and how its principles can be used to promote a deeper understanding of life. As head coach of the world champion Chicago Bulls, Phil Jackson developed an innovative approach to the game that flies in the face of the self-centered dogma that has imprisoned the soul of American sports since the 1950s when Vince Lombardi gave his first winning-is-everything pep talk. Phil′s system centers on the power of awareness and selfless teamwork to achieve success on the court and to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life. As he puts it, “Awareness is everything. Being aware is more important than being smart.”

During the off-season, Phil Jackson lives in Montana. When Phil is not fly-fishing in Montana or riding his motorcycles cross-country, he shares his motivational techniques as a speaker touring the world explaining his innovative theories of effective team building.

Books by Phil Jackson:

Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior
With a new introduction, Phil Jackson’s modern classic of motivation, teamwork, and Zen insight is updated for a whole new readership

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball.”—Phil Jackson

Eleven years ago, when Phil Jackson first wrote these words in Sacred Hoops, he was the triumphant head coach of the Chicago Bulls, known for his Zen approach to the game. He hadn’t yet moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he would bring his total to an astounding nine NBA titles. In his thought-provoking memoir, he revealed how he directs his players to act with a clear mind—not thinking, just doing; to respect the enemy and be aggressive without anger or violence; to live in the moment and stay calmly focused in the midst of chaos; to put the “me” in service of the “we”—all lessons applicable to any person’s life, not just a professional basketball player’s. This inspiring book went on to sell more than 400,000 copies.

In his new introduction, Jackson explains how the concepts in Sacred Hoops are relevant to the issues facing his current team—and today’s reader.

Phil Jackson is the NBA’s career leader in playoff victories and playoff winning percentage; he has won nine NBA titles, tying Red Auerbach for the most in a lifetime. He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Last Season: A Team in Search of Its Soul
One of the most successful coaches in the history of basketball offers his personal account of a season like no other—the extraordinary ride of the 2003-2004 Los Angeles Lakers.

From the signing of the future Hall-of-Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton, to the intricacies of managing difficult relationships and public feuds, facing Shaq’s injuries, contract disputes, and team meltdowns, all in the shadow of the Kobe Bryant trial-slash-media circus, Phil Jackson somehow guided his team through to its fourth NBA Finals in his five years as its coach.

With explosive revelations and never-before-told insights, Jackson brings to life this amazing season coaching a team as talented, and as troubled as any he’s ever known.

More than a Game
AS THE GAME REVEALS THE PLAYER, SO DOES THIS BOOK REVEAL THE COACH

Phil Jackson is the most celebrated coach in basketball today, earning that respect by guiding his teams in Chicago and Los Angeles to an astounding eight NBA championships. The key to his success, he thinks is his ability to understand the complexities of the players as well as the intricacies of the game. With this memorable book, Phil joins his friend Charley Rosen, a former player and coach who knows success at the game’s highest levels, to bring new insight to the challenge of coaching and to honor the innate grace of basketball and its players.

Jackson and Rosen take you from the cracked blacktop courts of the inner city to the polished hardwood of the country’s finest arenas, exposing the demanding reality of professional basketball: a world of glamour, glitter, and greed, in which nobility can still be found in the single-minded pursuit of athletic perfection.

From his playing days in college and with the world champion Knicks of the 1970’s to his victories courtside with the Bulls and the Lakers, Jackson relates his philosophy of coaching, fondly talks about the memorable players and plays of the past, and candidly expresses his feelings about today’s rules and referees. Simply a must for any fan, this book reveals the very heart of the sport, reminding us that basketball is much more than just a game.
