Olivia Fox Cabane extracts practical lessons on how to make a winning first impression from behavioral science research. She highlights the importance of getting those first moments right, explaining the social psychological phenomenon, “The Privacy Act.”
“Everything you do gets filtered through that first impression,” Cabane notes. “So if you make a good one you have the cards stacked in your favor. If you make a bad one, it’s not impossible to overcome, but you have a mountain to climb.”
Citing examples of people who have mastered the skill of charisma, Cabane relates the story of William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli, two opposing candidates for the office of Prime Minister in 19th century Britain. “The week before the election, both rivals happened to take the same young lady to dinner on consecutive evenings, so the press asked her what impressions the rivals had made on her. She said, ‘After dining with Mr. Gladstone, I thought he was the cleverest man in England. After dining with Mr. Disraeli, I thought I was the cleverest woman in England.’”
Cabane concludes that Disraeli practiced the following: “Conversation skills are not a question of wit, wisdom, or wordplay. They all boil down to one thing: attitude. The attitude you want to have is that the person you are facing is the most fascinating human being you have ever met.”
Cabane applies social science to create interactive presentations that give her clients the tools they need to have better work performance. From making the perfect first impression to handling your inner critic, Cabane can help you and your colleagues obtain the self-confidence and necessary social abilities to skillfully manage even the most difficult situations and people that inevitably come along in the corporate world.
