With 107 career wins, Misty May-Treanor is the #1 ranked player in the history of competitive beach volleyball. Known for her rigorous ethics, values, and hard work, the three-time Olympic gold medalist is one of the most respected role models to come out of any sport.
No other beach volleyball team has managed to match the seamless dynamic of Misty and her long-time partner Kerri Walsh Jennings. The duo broke onto the international scene with a gold-medal win at the Athens 2004 Olympics. They repeated their winning streak four years later in Beijing, not to mention an extensive collection of title championships, both nationally and worldwide, that they captured in between.
Misty’s performance and solid character earned her numerous corporate sponsorships and media spotlight, including appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show, and CSI Miami. A ruptured Achilles tendon may have ended her run on Dancing with the Stars in 2008, but did not stop her from going on to win her third and final gold with Walsh Jennings in the 2012 London Olympics.
Since her retirement from competitive sports, Misty has been an active emissary of the Special Olympics and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2013 she graduated with a master’s degree in coaching and administration and works as a volleyball coach in southern California and motivational speaker nationwide.
Passionate about getting America fit, Misty has partnered with healthcare company Abbott to create “Full-Life Hacks,” a video series that aims to get families moving by showcasing silly fun activities they can do at home at low costs such as egg-and-spoon races and living room obstacle courses.
Three Time Olympic Gold Medalist
As one of the most respected major corporate brand spokespersons, Misty enjoys impactful Corporate brand partnerships with leading companies Nike, Wheaties, AT&T, Visa, Arnold/Oroweat/Brownberry Breads, Purina, Gatorade, Stouffers, OPI, Spalding, Teva Respiratory, Topps, Abreva and more.
Misty has dominated every level of the sport of volleyball, both as an indoor volleyball Champion(two California State Championships at Newport Harbor High School, 1991-1995 and one NCAA Division 1 Championship at Long beach State, 1998) in addition to securing her position as the most decorated athlete in beach volleyball history.
Looking back, it’s no surprise that this Long Beach, CA native became a professional athlete. Misty grew up playing beach volleyball at the Santa Monica Pier with her parents, 1968 volleyball Olympian, Butch May and Barbara May, a nationally ranked tennis player. In her adult life, Misty is married to Major League Baseball catcher, Matt Treanor.
Three-time Olympic champion, Misty May-Treanor discusses the pressure put on high school athletes to specialize in a sport at a younger age. Touching on her own experience as a former high school athlete and more recently, her work coaching and running clinics, she explains that high school athletes work just as hard as their counterparts in college and professional leagues.
In addition to perhaps not being ready to choose a niche, she points out the physical benefits of playing multiple sports in that it gives kids’ bodies “a break.” “It’s too young,” she comments on the practice of cornering students into one sport. “I just see so many break downs in bodies from overuse.”
