Consistently ranked one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes and Fortune, Indra Nooyi has been the president and CEO of Pepsi Co. since 2006. Under her leadership, the company has increased its annual earnings from $2.7 billion to $6.5 billion and shifted its focus to healthier products.

Nooyi grew up in India. Encouraged by her mother to aim high, she studied hard and was admitted to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta. After gaining experience at Johnson & Johnson, she moved to the U.S. with a small amount of money to pursue a masters degree from Yale school of management.

During her early career at Boston Consulting Group and Motorola, Nooyi often felt that she had to work harder than her male colleagues in order to prove her worth. As an Indian immigrant, she also dealt with cultural biases. Furthermore, she had to find ways to balance her demanding work schedule with her role as a wife and mother to two daughters.

In 1994, she joined Pepsi, where she was promoted to president and CFO in 2001, and CEO in 2006. Nooyi faced the challenge of taking over a global company that was readily losing market share and seen by many of its investors as too large for its own good. However, with daring new ideas and a focus on major shifts in design and products, Nooyi has steadily increased revenue over the past 10 years, raising stock values and bringing unity to a once divided company. She had received numerous honors from business and leadership associations for her impressive achievements and the outstanding example she has set for aspiring businesswomen and leaders.

Indra Nooyi outlines the “5 C Model” that has guided her entire business career. Though some of these 5 characteristics came to her more easily than others, one of them almost proved to be her downfall: communication.

Her first semester at Yale University she actually failed a required communication course and as a result, had to repeat it in a summer session. Now she regards that chain of events as “one of the best things” to happen to her. “I learned to sync my brain with the output from my mouth, so I started to slow down what I was saying,” she remarks on the huge difference the experience had on her communication skills.

She notes that it is “impossible to over-invest” on these skills due to the vital role they play in the real world. “As a leader, you constantly have to mobilize the troops,” she says.
