Engage in your own inner wisdom
Noted author and visionary Dr. Christiane Northrup asks us to ponder these questions because she finds that lasting health, wholeness, pleasure, and joy are only possible when we discover and practice behaviors associated with these same qualities. Dr. Northrup believes that the time to listen to your body’s wisdom is now!
“Once you engage your own inner wisdom, you can change or improve your habits of thought, your emotions, and your behaviors… and create a more positive and joyful life experience right away,” Dr. Northrup says. “This process, when engaged in regularly, heals both your present and your future. It also enables you to live a life full of joy, meaning, and purpose—right here, right now.”
Internationally known for her empowering approach to women’s health and wellness, Dr. Northrup is a leading proponent of medicine and healing that acknowledges the unity of the mind and body, as well as the powerful role of the human spirit in creating health. Following a career as a practicing physician in obstetrics and gynecology for over 25 years, Dr. Northrup has dedicated her lifework to helping women (and the men who love them) learn how to flourish on all levels by creating health, prosperity, and pleasure in their lives. She says, “I’ve spent the first half of my life studying and footnoting everything that can go wrong with the female body—and figuring out how to fix it. I’m dedicating the second half of my life to illuminating everything that can go right with the female body, including teaching women how to truly flourish.”
One can see that Dr. Northrup “walks her talk,” especially when she first put her own personal truth on paper in 1994 in her first book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom (Bantam). This groundbreaking reference of raw facts and intriguing case histories became a New York Times bestseller, has sold more than 1.9 million copies, and has been translated into 17 languages.
In 1998, Dr. Northrup continued to gain national recognition with her first two public television specials Women’s Bodies, Women’s Minds and Women’s Bodies, Women’s Choices. The success of these programs led to two more popular specials, which debuted in August of 1999: Your Diet, Your Health and The Wisdom of Menopause.
In March, 2007, Dr. Northrup brought her cutting-edge ideas and groundbreaking guidance on the most commonly misunderstood female health issues to audiences nationwide with her public television special: Menopause and Beyond: New Wisdom for Women. This show was based on Dr. Northrup’s long-anticipated revised edition of The Wisdom of Menopause—the book that women around the world have embraced, including Oprah Winfrey, who sought Dr. Northrup’s wise words when she turned 50 and faced “The Big M.”
Dr. Northrup’s follow-up books, The Secret Pleasures of Menopause (2008), which is sold in 7 different languages, and The Secret Pleasures of Menopause Playbook (2009) deliver a powerful message that will help millions of women understand that at midlife, life has just begun! In The Secret Pleasures of Menopause, Dr. Northrup proves beyond a doubt that any stage of life—including midlife—can be the beginning of a very exciting and fulfilling time, full of pleasure beyond your wildest dreams.
Dr. Northrup continues to be a familiar face in the media. Her numerous empowering works have been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today show, NBC Nightly News, Rachael Ray, The View, Good Morning America, PBS, ABC’s 20/20, and The Dr. Oz. Show.
As a business owner, physician, former surgeon, mother, writer, and speaker, Dr. Northrup acknowledges our individual and collective capacity for growth, freedom, joy, and balance.
Christiane Northrup advocates a paradigm shift in women’s healthcare that is focused on meeting our full potential to prosper rather than fearfully treating our bodies like ticking time bombs. She notes that yearly screenings and controversial moves like “preventative mastectomies” in healthy women give us an “illusion of control” when in reality there is nothing we can do to fully ensure that nothing bad will ever happen to us.
Northrup cites several scientific studies that demonstrate that the body is self-healing. She highlights one study that compared Norwegian women who received yearly mammograms with women who didn’t. The women who regularly screen had 22% more incidents of cancer than the women who didn’t get tested.
Dr. Northrup quotes the one of the study’s conclusions, which was reprinted in the Wall Street Journal: “The women who didn’t undergo regular screening probably had the same occurrences of breast cancer, but their bodies corrected the abnormalities on their own.”
Dr. Northrup challenges the public and medical community to rethink the way we frame healthcare. Rather than treat our body like a disaster waiting to happen, she explores steps we can take to fully tap into our potential to thrive at every stage of life. Pulling from decades of experience as an OB/GYN, Dr. Northrup initiates conversations that most doctors avoid and makes a compelling scientifically supported case for a holistic approach to health and medicine.

Women′s Bodies, Women′s Wisdom For the past 5000 years, the female body and everything having to do with it, have been seen as inferior to the male standard. For this reason, men and women both have been taught that the processes of the female body are at the best major inconveniences and at worst, curses visited upon women because Eve at the apple and thus brought evil to mankind. But we have now entered an era characterized by the rise in the status of women, and a growing global awareness of how gender abuse in all its many guises hurts all of us.
Along with this rise in feminine consciousness has come the need to revise our thinking about the female body and its processes. Far from being a source of pain and shame, women all over the world - along with many scientists - are discovering that a woman′s body is deeply connected to the cycles of the earth - and that when we learn to respect and learn from these cycles, we enter the realm of true wisdom.
The Mind/Body Connection in Health: Trusting the Wisdom of Our Bodies Consciousness creates the body. Our thoughts, emotions, past experiences, family histories, beliefs, relationships, nutrition, and exercise patterns all form a seamless web of energy and information that leads to our current state of health.
Part of the art of living fully and healthfully is accepting that innate wisdom of our bodies as they give us daily feedback about what affects our health - either positively or negatively. When we come to see our bodily symptoms and feelings are our inner guidance system trying to get our attention, we are free to create health daily by making adjustments in our thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and nourishment levels vs. reacting only once disease has developed.
Becoming an Exceptional Person While Remaining Human: Eight Principles for Health & Happiness In over 25 years of medical practice, Dr. Northrup has observed eight principles for approaching medical care - or life in general - that can, when applied consciously, enhance one′s ability to heal or remain healthy, while also living a joyous and fruitful life. Though she originally articulared these as "eight principles for becoming an exceptional doctor" when she was invited to address the graduating University of Vermont College of Medicine Class of 1997 at their commencement ceremony, she later realized that, whether we are doctors or patients or both, we all must embrace our common humanity if we are to experience optimal health and healing. These eight principles form a road map for this adventure.
