Nicole Richie’s role in the reality series The Simple Life alongside Paris Hilton, her best friend at the time, made her an overnight sensation, but also catapulted her into an often tumultuous public life. Learning from her missteps, Richie turned herself around and today is the founder and owner of four successful businesses in addition to being a two-time novelist and the proud mother of two children.
Over seven years Richie grew her brand Harlow House 1960 into a world-wide fashion empire. She started the business with a focus on jewelry and has expanded it to be one of the few celebrity clothing lines that combines style and functionality in order to meet real women’s fashion needs. Richie has also launched collections for Macy’s and the maternity story A Pea in the Pod.
Richie’s self-deprecating sense of humor, amusing take on daily life, and openness have gained her over 4 million Twitter followers. Her social media fan base inspired her latest entertainment venture, the VH1 reality show Candidly Nicole. She is also the founder of the annual Pearl xChange Conference, an inspirational conference for women.
Richie and her husband Joel Madden, the lead singer of Good Charlotte, established the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation in 2007. They’ve partnered with various organizations to provide children in the U.S. and abroad with more opportunities through projects like water-pump installments and environmental education programs in schools.
Comedic socialite and star of The Simple Life, Nicole Richie, is the adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie and his then wife Brenda Harvey. Nicole’s former best friend and fellow cast member on The Simple Life was Paris Hilton.
Growing up in the spotlight wasn’t easy, especially when her famous father was going through a much publicized affair. After graduating from Montclair College Preparatory School in 1999 she went on to study art and media for two years at the University of Arizona.
Nicole Richie is now married to Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden and they have two beautiful children together. She has appeared in Kids in America and made guest appearances in TV series including Eve, Six Feet Under, American Dreams, 8 Simple Rules and Chuck.
She is the author of The Truth About Diamonds, a novel based on her life, as well as a second novel, Priceless. As the face of Bongo Jeans and Jimmy Choo ad campaigns, she announced in 2007 that she was coming out with jewelry, accessories, sunglass, and perfume line and a style book. Her debut jewelry line, House of Harlow was available at Kitson’s online boutique and in 2010 she extended her line to include clothing and shoes. She also joined maternity store, A Pea in the Pod to create a new collection of maternity wear.
Next, Nicole Richie expanded her business by offering a women’s line called Winter Kate featuring bright prints and shapes, paisley’s and florals. She is the recipient of “Entrepreneur of the Year” for her House of Harlow 1960 brand from the Glamour Women of the Year Awards and was nominated for the “Celebrity Fashion Line” at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards.
Nicole’s next adventure was a handbag collection which is available at Bergdort Goodman’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Shopbop.com. Richie has starred as one of the three mentors on NBC’s Fashion Star and currently stars in her reality show, Candidly Nicole.
Nicole Richie discusses learning from past mistakes and even coming to appreciate them as catalysts for change. Hinting at her own blunders and struggles with drug abuse during her early 20s, which were highly publicized in tabloids and entertainment-focused media, Richie acknowledges that in hindsight she saw what happened as a blessing.
Drawing from her experience, she emphasizes the need to forgive yourself in order to move on, grow, and then be able to extend that same compassion to others. "We have got to help each other out," she insists. "We have to say your mind plus my mind is going to help us evolve. It's the only way we're going to get to the next level."

Priceless
Tall, blond, and willowy, this twenty-two-year-old seems to have everything going for her—she’s rich and gorgeous, a talented singer, and has just returned to her Park Avenue penthouse after a year studying in Paris. But since her mother’s tragic death years ago, her father, an extremely successful financier, has been her only family—and if she’s being honest, her only true friend. All that changes when Jacob Williams is arrested on charges of fraud, and the SEC freezes the family’s bank accounts. With her father in jail and her partying pals suddenly scarce, Charlotte escapes Manhattan and heads to the one place she doesn’t think anyone will come looking: New Orleans.
Determined to rebuild her life, Charlotte moves in with her beloved former nanny and finds a job in a local restaurant. Between trying to make ends meet and hiding from her past, she meets Kat, a fellow fashionista who introduces her to the best of the Big Easy’s bohemian style. With Kat by her side, Charlotte begins to haunt nightclubs, securing singing gigs that soon begin to heat up—as does her friendship with a local boy, Jackson.
But Charlotte’s being followed by an angry stalker who wants nothing more than to destroy her for her father’s crimes. And with Mardi Gras just around the corner, the masquerade has only just begun . . .
