The architect of Netflix’s enviable business culture, Patty McCord is innovating leaders’ styles of motivating talent, building trust, and creating a vibrant work dynamic. A veteran H.R. professional turned “talent officer,” she has a thorough understanding of both corporate and start-up environments and how both can push their boundaries to thrive.
Patty was Chief Talent Officer of Netflix for 12 years. She is the author of the Netflix Culture Deck, a slide presentation that has come to be known as “the most important document ever to come out of Silicon Valley.” The Netflix Culture Deck has been viewed online more than 11 million times.
In addition to designing Netflix’s culture, Patty was in charge of turning those concepts into daily behaviors. As a speaker and coach, she offers maverick ideas and guidelines for putting cultural changes into practice.
Workplace Innovator, Culture and Leadership Consultant and Former Chief Talent Officer, Netflix
Patty McCord coaches and advises a small group of companies and entrepreneurs on culture and leadership as the Principal of Patty McCord Consulting.
She has many years of working with business leaders and aspiring management to help people realize and practice leadership. She is an innovative businessperson who is willing to push the boundaries of thinking about the way we work.
McCord served as chief talent officer of Netflix for 12 years. Along with input from the Netflix management team, she helped to create the Netflix Culture Deck. When it was posted on the web, this presentation took on a life of its own. Sheryl Sandberg has said it “may be the most important document ever to come out of Silicon Valley.” The presentation has been viewed more than five million times.
McCord was in charge of operationalizing those concepts. This involved creating or sometimes eliminating patterns, systems and structure so that the words and aspirations of the culture document became behaviors ad modes of operating.
McCord participated in the Initial Public Offering (IPO) with Netflix and before that with Pure Atria Software. She has worked with small start-ups and very large companies. She is a veteran of Sun Microsystems, Borland and Seagate Technologies. Her background includes staffing, diversity, communications and international Human Resources positions.
Patty McCord challenges the audience to rethink their approach to HR and change the ways they motivate people, develop talent, build trust and connect business objectives to employees. She recalls her own transformation from traditional HR director to "product manager for people" and how she evolved her role to meet changing times.
After having to lay off one-third of a young company, Netflix, she vowed to stop telling people "common HR myths", particularly the concept of a company being a family. "Anybody here ever laid off a family member?" she rhetorically asks. "We've developed a language in our function that doesn't make sense to a lot of people."
Despite so many innovations in the business world, Patty McCord’s seen that most companies continue to handle their HR employee relations the way they always have. The woman responsible for Netflix’s legendary work culture, Patty introduces start-ups, corporations, and business schools alike to new ways of working and creating engaging cultures. Patty’s fascinating anecdotes and insights leave the audience questioning the status quo and brainstorming better ways to interact with employees.
As our world becomes increasingly dynamic and connected, the classically standard ways in which we work have simply become irrelevant in today’s workforce. Many companies are struggling not only to understand and accept this certainty, but more importantly to identify the key catalysts behind this transformation.
Patty McCord explores how demographics, technology and consumer transparency have already changed the way we work, explains why the idea of a “permanent employee” is no longer a realistic prospect, and encourages audiences to look to the future. In this innovative, informative and forward-thinking presentation, McCord emboldens audiences to embrace change and provides critical insight for companies that want to be ahead of the game as the future of work continues to advance.
Reinventing HR
No one in recent history has disrupted the grounds of human resources quite like Patty McCord. In this presentation, McCord engages audiences by delving into the compelling and innovative ideas that made her Netflix slide deck on company culture go viral. She shares thoughts on how to rethink terms like “fired” and “quit” in order to understand the realities of changing jobs in a way that honors service and teaches people to manage their own careers.
Her belief is that by thinking like inventors, saying no to “best practices” and aligning what people do to the business and the customers, companies can take the policing out of policy to make work more productive and meaningful.
Diversity and Equality in the Workplace
As the head of Diversity Programs at Sun Microsystems in the early 90’s, Patty McCord held many talks, programs, initiatives and celebrations to promote equality and diversity. Today, gains towards increased diversity and equality in our society have been startlingly lacking.
In this presentation, McCord challenges the audience to change their way of thinking about these issues. Sharing data is a start, but there is hard work ahead to achieve real transformation. First, if equal pay is an issue at your company—fix it. Without a correction to current conditions, we are guaranteed to see the same problems lag forever. McCord acknowledges that the three most female-centric departments in companies are Marketing, Human Resources and Finance. She calls on women in leadership positions to ask—how come we haven’t yet fixed equal pay? We OWN it!
