Magic Johnson Jr.'s speaking fee falls within range: Over $75,000
Earvin “Magic” Johnson went from being one of the most powerful players on the NBA court to one of the most influential business figures in the U.S. The two-time Hall of Famer, multiple NBA MVP, and Olympic Gold Medalist, is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Magic Johnson Enterprises, an investment conglomerate valued at an estimated $1 billion dollars.

The conglomerate is comprised of multiple business entities and partnerships which includes Yucaipa Johnson, a $500 million dollar private equity fund; EquiTrust Financial Services, a fixed annuities and life insurance services company; SodexoMAGIC, a food service and facilities management company; ASPIRE, an African-American television network; The Marvel Experience, a virtual 3-D attraction centered around Marvel characters; Los Angeles Football Club, a new Major League Soccer team; and Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies, a high school drop-out prevention program.
Since his brave announcement in 1991 that he was HIV positive, Mr. Johnson has been one of the most prominent figures promoting education, understanding, prevention, and research regarding the disease. He is the chairman and founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation, one of the world’s foremost philanthropic forces. The organization develops programs and support community-based organizations that address the educational, health, and social needs of ethnically diverse, urban communities.
Basketball Legend
Having achieved every imaginable goal from a player′s perspective, Earvin “Magic” Johnson embarked on another basketball-related ambition in 1994 when he began his first year as the Lakers′ vice president.
Magic′s illustrious playing career, which consisted of hundreds of highlights, is most accurately summarized in a single word – winner. He was the guiding force behind championship-winning teams at every conceivable level including high school, college and professional. He was also on a team that captured an Olympic Gold Medal.
During his 12-year NBA career, he led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988) and nine appearances in the NBA Finals. He was named the NBA′s “Most Valuable Player” on three occasions (1987, 1989 and 1990), NBA Finals MVP three times (1980, 1982 and 1987), earned All-NBA First Team honors nine times, participated in 11 All-Star Games and concluded his career as the league′s all-time assist leader.
After announcing his retirement from the NBA on November 7, 1991, due to the HIV virus, Magic′s immense popularity resulted in his being voted as a starter in the 1992 All-Star Game, during which he promptly earned MVP honors. Later that year, he became a member of the 1992 United States gold-medal winning Olympic basketball team in Barcelona. He retired ranked among the Lakers′ all-time leaders in virtually every statistical category, averaging 19.7 points, 11.4 assists and 7.3 rebounds in 874 career regular season contests.
While Magic may be best known for his prowess on the basketball court, he is also an entrepreneur with multi-faceted business interests. His latest venture, Johnson Development Corporation, develops commercial property in long-neglected minority urban and suburban neighborhoods. He is building new, state-of-the-art multiplex theaters under the marquee name “Magic Johnson Theaters” with partner Sony Entertainment, and shopping centers featuring supermarkets and other retail space. His additional entities include Magic Johnson T′s, an official T-shirt licensee of the NBA, NFL, NHL and NCAA; and Magic Johnson All-Star Camps, which operate youth and adult basketball camps in Southern California and Hawaii.

Mr. Johnson illustrates this a challenge he faced in the early ‘90s when he announced that he was HIV-positive, a time when numerous misconceptions and fears were circulating around a disease that had been on the CDC’s radar for less than a decade. Due to a lack of knowledge and understanding, many NBA players stated that they would not play with Magic on the court out of fear of contracting HIV from him.
“Instead of getting upset I decided to education them,” Mr. Johnson describes the campaign he took to raise awareness about the disease so that there would come a day when the people with it would not be marginalized.
Magic Johnson has become a leading voice on how to invest in urban communities, creating redevelopment opportunities in underserved areas, most notably through his movie theaters and his partnership with Starbucks.
