Joy Bauer Nutrition, located in Manhattan and Westchester, is one of the largest nutrition centers in the country. It was built by Joy Bauer to provide nutritional counseling to adults and children across a range of fitness concerns including weight management, diabetes, eating disorders, sports nutrition, pregnancy, menopause and many other conditions. For five years she was Director of Nutrition and Fitness for the “Heart Smart Kids Program," working with the Mount Sinai Medical Centre's Department of Paediatric Cardiology in New York City. She served as nutrition consultant to the Columbia Presbyterian Church medical centre, clinical nutritionist to the neurosurgical team at Mount Sinai and in addition taught anatomy, physiology and sports nutrition at New York University's School of Continuing Education; at New York she was also solo nutritionist responsible for all of that institution's faculty, students and athletes.

Joy introduces her audience to five superfoods that can promote better health, wonderful looks and a younger mindset. She explains, “The [magic] pills do exist, you can buy them in your local grocery store, you can bring them home and stash them in your kitchen. Food is that powerful. By eating the right foods you really can help to control, to manage and sometimes even to reverse medical conditions."

She goes on to address specific superfoods that can assist with health. She says, “Quinoa… is an edible seed, and is very rich in protein, and that makes it a great non-animal source of protein for vegans and vegetarians and it's also really good for diabetics, because it's a starch that automatically comes packaged with proteins, so helps to keep your blood sugar nice and level."

Addressing another superfood that might need some persuasion for the audience to get enthusiastic about, she urges, “Eat your spinach. The neat thing about spinach is that it is an ultimate brain food. Really, it can help boost your memory and your brainpower. In a 25 year Harvard study they looked at 13,000 women, and the women who ate the most dark leafy green vegetables like spinach had less of an age-related memory and cognitive loss as they got older."
