    In 1977, starting with an old Datsun pickup truck and $500 in the bank, George Hedley was able to build a thriving $50 million construction business in just seven years. George Hedley breaks down the process of calculating a bid or project estimation, focusing on crew costs. He goes beyond adding up wages and incorporates a safety net to ensure that even in the case of unseen hurdles, the project will be completed at a profit.

“Now occasionally your crew has some downtime. There’s some rain, they go out and the job’s not ready, they have to wait for an inspector,” George lists a number of factors that often result in unforeseen delays. “I like to encourage contractors to add within their bid rates a ‘sloppy factor’, a ‘fudge factor’, maybe 5% or 10%.”
